MOTIFS - Boatyard of Edam, Lisbon Harbor, The Bridge, Portugal Factories, Pirate Ship, Estombar.
Berger loved the language of painting. He often used the same location to explore the visual language with the first painting being done on site. He would bring these into the studio and new paintings were created from it. He would simplify shapes, color, and composition returning to the ideas over and again on site or in the studio. These series or motifs would be created over his lifetime. This section includes several motifs but not all of them: Boatyard of Edam, Lisbon Harbor, The Bridge, Portugal Factories, Pirate Ship, Estombar.
"I observe my motif well in advance of the actual painting. The advantage of this method is that I have the image in my mind's eye and so am well armed when I actually paint the motif -- armed to seek the essential.
I find that when a motif really interests me, I do many variations in the studio, as I cannot express all my feelings in just one painting." JB
